After regularly donating to local charity United Way of Southeast Mississippi, 38-year old Hattiesburg doctor Charles Griffith decided to buy a $100 ticket for the organization's seventh annual "Home Sweet Home Raffle". Little did he know that his name would be pulled out of the drum containing 2,160 other tickets on Monday evening, making him the lucky winner of a $285,000 three-bedroom house. The home raffle, which was sponsored by the Greater Hattiesburg Home Builders Association and Leaf River Cellulose, was designed to benefit the 21 agencies the United Way organisation serves locally. The grand prize was built by Dana Smith of DRS Construction. According to Dan Kibodeaux, executive director of the United Way charity,"Like we say, the thing about this is, all the money that we raise stays here in the community. I think it is a testament to the giving and caring nature of our community." The house raffle failed to raise as much as in previous years due to weaker economic conditions, however it remains an important source of funding for United Way, helping raise an average of about $170,000 over the last three years. Local homebuilders provided a range of discounted services and Leaf River helps contribute $70,000 to the project to help cover costs every year.
