Last minute charity raffle ticket wins couple a $550K dream home

US couple Jennifer Banzhoff and Joseph Dukestand bought a $100 ticket in this year's St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway win a house raffle after seeing the $550,000 home in Westhaven, Franklin, USA. At the very last minute, they decided to buy two more tickets. As luck would have it, one of them was picked as the winning ticket for the property raffle.

St. Jude Dream Home GiveawayTheir prize, a 3,100 sqft property, features 3 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms, a bonus room, study, pantry and a 2-storey walkout wraparound porch.

According to their interview on the Tennessean website, the couple expects to move in in a few months, after selling their current home and completing the relevant paperwork. As with other US property raffles, they will be expected to pay over $100K in taxes on their winnings.

This year's St. Jude Dream Home Giveaway raffle attracted a record number of ticket sales. A total of $1,659,400 was raised with 16,594 tickets at $100 each. This came just below the target of 17,000 tickets for 2010.

All proceeds will go towards treatment and research at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

UK?
Why don't we have more of these in the UK? I keep reading about house raffles in the US that seem to sell lots of tickets. Over here we have the National Lottery but I don't get the impression charities organise this type of thing as much as their US counterparts?

Re: UK?
@ Freddy,

You're right I can't remember seeing a charity house raffle in the UK, whereas there are lots in other countries. I don't know but guessing it's due to tax maybe? I like the way local businesses get involved to help build the property - they get free advertising and help contribute the prize = win win

UK lagging behind
Yes, if only a UK organiser could get everything together and make it work! By now they should have figured out what is allowed and what isn't?
