The BBC has been regularly covering news surrounding house competitions, raffles and lotteries. This short article provides a summary of the "Inside Out" TV programme that screened on BBC1 on 11 February. The article focuses on the recent trend we have seen in the UK of individuals and couples running private lotteries and competitions to give away their properties online. It includes quotes from Rafik Patel, who is organising the Win a London Pad competition (valued at £8.25 million in total), together with Kirk Clugston, organiser of the Win My Bungalow competition (valued at £570,000). Whilst true that many of these competitions are indeed lotteries, the article's author doesn't quite seem to grasp the difference the UK gambling commission makes between a prize competition and a lottery. In my understanding, the whole point is that there is no such thing as a legal private lottery in the UK, unless it's absolutely free to enter! If there is sufficient skill involved, it becomes a prize competition. In both cases, the strict rules of the Gambling Commission had to be taken into consideration and the private lotteries have to come complete with skill-testing questions in order to be deemed legitimate. Re: Home sellers turn to lotteries @ Prize Competitions Thanks for your input. Technically you're right that in the UK, a lottery may only be run legally for profit by a charity. The correct way to distinguish between a lottery and a prize competition does hinge on the element of skill involved. Thank you for helping clarify this point! |
