Winner of A Piece of NZ home raffle

The Cambridge house raffle organised by pastor Murray Smith and his wife Michelle was won by Warwick Hutchinson from Auckland. He picks up a 5 bedroom home overlooking Lake Karapiro in New Zealand's beautiful Waipa District, valued NZ$1m (£435,000).

Warwick Hutchinson - Source: NZHerald.co.nzThe results of the home raffle were announced on Monday after 48,000 entries were received from across 93 countries, raising over NZ$1.2 million. Each entrant was required to buy a set of 6 iconic photos for NZ$25 to be entered into the raffle.

The proceeds will help fund the construction of a new church and community centre in Cambridge. To help realise this project, Murray and Michelle Smith offered their own family home as the main prize for the property raffle, after failing to sell it in the conventional way.

According to an interview on the NZ Herald, the local minister said donating the home gave the family a "freeing feeling", adding that his family were relaxed despite having no other assets or investments.

"A long time ago, we came to a point in our thinking that life doesn't consist of what you own ... and your identity, your security, can never be wrapped up in what you own."

Congratulations to Mr Hutchinson and to Murray and Michelle Smith. In particular, we're impressed by how well the house raffle was organised in a relatively short timeframe. We hope that more house competition organisers can offer the same levels of transparency and responsiveness to players - an essential ingredient to the success of this type of project.

Wonderful
The Smiths are an inspiration to this community. They organised something really special and changed one person's life in the process! I agree other house raffle organisers could learn a thing or 2 from them. Well done to the winner and you can still donate to help build the $3m church centre
